Tributes Pour In for Dick Cheney as a Composed and Influential Leader in the Political Arena

Political leaders across the United States offered tributes following the passing of Dick Cheney, with George W. Bush describing his ex-deputy as "an unflappable leader in the White House during significant crises."

Tributes from Colleagues

Bush wrote in a statement that he would honor his legacy "as a man of integrity and honor" and that history would remember him "as an exemplary government leader of his generation – a patriot who brought honesty, high intelligence and seriousness of purpose to every position he held."

Wyoming's senior senator shared accolades. "The state grieves the loss of Vice President Dick Cheney," he posted online.

"His resolute statesmanship guided significant developments in domestic and U.S. foreign policy for generations. Dick will be remembered as a towering figure who influenced world affairs in Wyoming, the country, and around the world."

National Reactions

Elected officials nationwide also commented about the 46th vice-president.

"He committed decades to public service–across multiple federal institutions," stated Ohio's GOP legislator. "He demonstrated resolute devotion to our homeland protection, strength, and founding values."

Iowa's female senator commented: "Whether Vice President, Secretary of Defense, or in Congress, Dick Cheney was always proud to be an American. His dedication to combating extremism safeguarded against similar tragedies. His service was distinguished and dutifully. Our prayers are with his family."

Personal Accounts

The state's chief executive wrote: "Our initial acquaintance began when we were fellow legislators and he was in the Republican leadership circle. He showed deliberation, reliable, and an advocate for his beloved Wyoming. Americans observed his direction as Defense Secretary, guiding armed forces planning during the Middle Eastern conflict. He performed his duties devotedly in all his governmental roles. His absence will be felt."

Previous top lawyer and representative, the Michigan politician, reflected upon their time in federal government. "He demonstrated character, a remarkable politician and a proud American," Schuette wrote.

The organization leader, head of the conservative institute American Enterprise Institute, commented on the loss of its one-time member. "He demonstrated power in the right-leaning political sphere and made a profound impact on our country," the president stated.

Government Reactions

President's office has still to make an official announcement. The GOP frontrunner was active on social media this morning but has not mentioned Cheney's death.
