The Trump phenomenon's most illuminating and defining moments – not its most important, nor most harsh, nor most hazardous, nor most senseless, but possibly its most revealing – emerged earlier this harvest season. During the period of a few weeks, the American president commenced revealing all observers his plans for a lavish reception room double the dimensions than the White House and then began unilaterally ripping down the East Wing portion to erect it.
He has committed acts 10,000 times as bad – the present calculation of deaths from his cuts to USAID is 600,000 and rising, and this week a study forecast his petroleum strategies would cause deaths another 1.3 million. Yet nothing as characteristic. No previous president would have attempted – really, no other president would have imagined – unilaterally destroying major areas of the executive mansion in order to erect a palace-inspired entertainment space, with the enthusiastic participation of numerous the nation's most affluent, nearly all of which maintain dealings with public institutions.

As confusing as it is to observe the chief executive attempt to overturn the established notion of democracy and substitute it with its polar opposite, there remains a substantial portion of Americans who should not find it entirely new. That is those of us – within elder demographics almost a majority – who were raised as mainline Protestant Christians.
We have witnessed throughout the years as rightwing evangelical churches transformed the Christ we were raised with into the complete reverse of who we understood him to be. At its most basic, they turned a figure of love into a symbol of hate who blesses precisely the cruelties that he criticized in the Gospel; this transformation occurred at a slower pace, over decades instead of months, but it is nonetheless disturbing in the same ways, a disorienting gut punch for numerous individuals.
A Harmful Christianity Establishes Itself
So let me first describe the Savior from my upbringing, since in theory the Savior is the core of any Christian faith, and given that the rapidly expanding group of Americans might have little sense about him as they consider themselves non-believers or uncertain individuals or religiously unaffiliated. I take no issue with these different approaches, nor with different religions; but I do think that contain precious wisdom of significant worth within Christian narrative.
It is unquestionably absolutely not the story of a mighty king appearing; rather, an infant arrives to displaced parents in an automotive shelter, who are forced to hastily depart to a foreign land to evade undercover officers. The infant develops in humble circumstances, a working carpenter; his teaching is about love for fellow humans, especially for the disadvantaged – not simply tender feelings, but tangible care, shown by providing food and protecting. Jesus' answer to violence is to present the opposite cheek – not as a gesture of compliant endurance, but as a way to educate the aggressor; his method regarding offenses is that if someone steals your outer garment you must offer the person your additional clothing also.
The evident and clear fact that the Savior from scripture advocates for a kind of extreme compassion concentrated on the poor has perpetually caused Christian religion something of a controversial faith: attractive to the populace, but due to its natural unconventionality demanding to be restrained. During the 1950s it was controlled via weakening – The Protestant faith was so prevalent that it essentially baptized the status quo.
A Conflict for the Highest Within Us
So I have been encouraged to observe the steadfast resistance to Trump develop in this past year. It has provided significant comfort to assist in constructing the campaign that has protested openly through repeated demonstrations, and appears to have motivated citizens to show up in numbers in interim political contests. We will need to continue it, and in the same spirit, featuring US banners throughout each rally and calls to the best parts in US history.

America is best defended, to put it differently, by reference to the best in US heritage, exactly as the Christian faith is best defended by reference to elements that cause it to be distinctive and wonderful, which is the example of Jesus. In all circumstances does it mean acting as if the most negative of both America and Christianity never occurred; it represents both humility and conviction, a combination that genuine US believers should embrace.
