Josh Allen Sacked 8 Occasions as Late Interception Dooms Bills in Loss to Houston

Very little went right for Josh Allen in a frustrating game on Thursday evening versus the Texans.

And still he nearly managed to willing the Bills to a victory before an late pick in the final minute sealed their fate in a 23-19 loss.

The quarterback took back-to-back tackles for loss on the Bills’ final possession, resulting in a long fourth down, but Buffalo (with seven wins) picked up significant yardage on a short pass from Allen to a receiver, who flipped a lateral to another teammate.

Following a false-start penalty created a fourth-and-6 for Buffalo, Calen Bullock intercepted the quarterback's throw at the Houston 9 with 24 seconds remaining.

We possessed a chance to win it there at the conclusion,” Allen said. “Our team performed a good job of staying in it and our defense saved us a couple of times. We must find a way, and we didn’t.”

Proved tough for the signal-caller to establish rhythm on a night he was brought down a career-high eight times and hit four additional instances. The QB passed for 253 passing yards with a pair of picks and zero scores after producing six TDs in a win over Tampa Bay the previous week.

“When they pressure our quarterback a dozen times, that's unacceptable,” Buffalo's head coach Sean McDermott said. “I disapprove of that statistic at all. It’s just not a safe way to play and it’s not a smart way to keep our field general in good shape for the rest of the season. We need to play better.”

Josh Allen was sluggish to rise after a sack in the first half. He said he was fine and that his shoulder “lost some feeling” after he fell on it in an awkward manner. He was questioned about being contacted so many times on Thursday.

“It’s not fun,” he remarked. “I encountered a few myself. I need to be more effective at disposing of the football. Too many times, I was going backwards.”

The Bills' QB surrendered 70 yards on the eight quarterback takedowns. Anderson had two and a half tackles for loss to lead the Houston defense. Another sack came when he nearly took Allen down near the scrimmage line, but he wriggled away and Anderson rose and chased him downfield to drop him for an 18-yard deficit to result in a punt early in the third.

Buffalo competed for a second consecutive matchup without wideout Coleman after he was again a non-participant after he was tardy to a team meeting before their previous contest. He was previously held out for the opening drive of a loss to New England in the fifth week after additionally being delayed for a team session.

No change. We are approaching it one day at a time,” the coach said. “I thought he had a better week, but we are taking it step by step. It was not that it was ignored, but we opted for the guys that provide the best chance.”

Khalil Shakir topped the Bills with eight receptions for 110 receiving yards and James Cook had 116 yards and a score.

The quarterback was disappointed that the team couldn’t execute in crucial moments.

In the end, we must execute, and we didn’t succeed of that this evening,” he said. “Whatever situation and whatever condition, we’ve got to find a way, and we didn’t.”
