A minimum of thirteen passengers perish and 98 injured in train derailment in the nation of Mexico.

A tragic train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the speed and execution of the country's flagship government projects.

The crash happened on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link developed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to offer an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.

“We are going to thoroughly investigate what caused this accident,” stated the national leader.

The official confirmed that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in critical condition. The official added plans to travel to Oaxaca to confer with those affected.

Key Undertaking of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose presidency finished the year before. This project was closely associated with his government's economic agenda for the southeastern region.

Another ambitious rail project from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to kickstart the economy of a historically poorer part of the country.

Building Management and Worries

The development of both train projects was managed by the army, marking a notable expansion of its duties in public projects. They were executed at an fast-tracked rate, defying expectations to be at least partly launched before the end of that government.

However, this accelerated timeline had also fueled significant questions over operational security.

  • Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This encompasses an earlier accident this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen several non-fatal derailments.

Demands for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the head of a major opposition party demanded an immediate halt in the construction and operation of all comparable projects.

This halt was suggested until the completion of a comprehensive safety audit. The party emphasized that the tragedy "demands immediate answers."

In reply, the head of state asserted that the train had been running in total adherence to all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would be "accountable" in both the construction and running of these strategic undertakings.
